オースティンは陶芸を媒体として、マオリ文化と神話における守護神「カイティアキ」を器や彫刻の形で表現しています。本展では、単なる装飾品としてではなく、現代の生活空間を守り、浄化し、変容させる、精神的に力強いカイティアキ（守護者）としてつくられた作品を紹介します。オースティンは、自身の芸術を、ニュージーランドのタラウェラ山脈と川という祖先のゆかりの地から直接受け継いだものだと考えています。作品に見られる、荒々しく傷跡のある質感や、光沢のあるメタリックな釉薬は、その地域に伝わる火山活動の記憶と癒しの水の物理的な表現となっています。

特注のドラム缶窯と、日本の楽焼技法を応用して制作された彼の作品は、北欧ミッドセンチュリーデザインの構造的な抑制と、マオリ文化の豊かで象徴的な質感を融合させています。オースティンの作品は、古代と現代をつなぐ生きた架け橋となり、祖先の知恵を力強い現代的な形へと昇華させています。

Aotearoa New Zealand artist David AUSTIN blends his art practice with his indigenous ancestry in crafting a tangible and accessible approach to experiencing Maori culture through everyday objects.

The artist uses ceramic art as his medium to introduce the Kaitiaki - a protector-being in Māori culture and mythology - in the form of vessels and sculptures. In this showcase, he creates works created and designed - not as purely decorative pieces, but as spiritually active kaitiaki (guardians) designed to protect, purify, and transform contemporary living spaces. The artist sees his art as something directly inherited from his ancestral landmarks of the Tarawera mountains and river in Aotearoa New Zealand. These can be seen in his works as the raw, scarred textures and luminous metallic glazes act as physical expressions of volcanic memory and healing waters found in that area.

Crafted using a custom-built oil drum kiln and adapted Japanese Raku techniques, his works bridge the structural restraint of Nordic Mid-Century design with the rich, symbolic textures of Māori culture. His works serve as a living threshold between the ancient and the modern, translating ancestral knowledge into powerful contemporary form.

ニュージーランドのンガティ・ランギティヒ（テ・アラワ）族の血を引く現代陶芸家、デイビッド・オースティンは、独自の「守護者オブジェ」という手法を通して陶芸の世界に革新をもたらしたことで高く評価されています。

10年間映画業界でキャリアを積んだ後、物質的な、触覚的な創造への深い情熱を満たすため、2018年に粘土に出会いました。以来、作品を通して自然、特に土と火との絶え間ない、そして生命力に満ちた対話に人生を捧げています。


A contemporary ceramic artist of Aotearoa New Zealand's Ngāti Rangitihi (Te Arawa) heritage, David AUSTIN has been recognized for revolutionizing his craft of ceramic art through his unique "guardian-object" practice.

Transitioning from a decade-long career in the film industry to satisfy his deep calling for physical, tactile creation, he discovered clay in 2018, and has since committed his life to a continuous, vital dialogue with nature in his work - specifically earth and fire.
