幼い頃からさまざまな芸術や自己表現に親しんできた、パリ生まれのアーティスト・TOSCANE。アートは、人生の困難を乗り越え、自身の物語や日々の気づき、夢を表現するための大切な存在であり続けています。
作品に登場する「Mona（モナ）」は、アーティスト自身の分身ともいえる存在です。Monaを通して、私たちは自分自身と周囲の世界との絶え間ない関わりのなかで、少しずつ自らのアイデンティティを形づくっていくことが描かれています。Monaに寄り添う白い動物たちは、守護や癒やしの象徴です。また、作品の中に散りばめられた漢字やさまざまなシンボルは、人生の意味を探し、生き抜こうとする思いを映し出す「お守り」のような言葉として描かれています。これらのモチーフには、がんを克服した経験や、創作と物語を紡ぐことに人生を捧げる決意など、TOSCANE自身の歩みと強さが込められています。緻密に描き込まれた画面、豊かな色彩、そして作品ごとに異なる動物たちは、それぞれがMonaの旅の一章を物語っています。
フランスと日本という二つの文化を行き来しながら制作を続けるTOSCANE。その作品は、人生の美しさ、はかなさ、そして神秘をめぐる、国境を越えた物語となっています。
本展は、Birdo Spaceで開催される2回連続の個展シリーズの第1回目です。塩竈で滞在制作してきた代表作を紹介するとともに、塩竈を拠点に活動する画家・釣舟富紀子さんとの共同制作作品も展示します。
Growing up immersed in various aspects of art and self-expression since childhood, Paris-born TOSCANE has made it her longtime companion in navigating through life’s challenges, and in expressing her stories, observations, and dreams.
Through Mona, the artist’s alter ego present in her works, she explores how the constant interaction between self and its surroundings shape one's identity. The white animals that accompany Mona symbolize protection and healing, while the Japanese kanji characters and symbols embedded within serve as mantras that reflect on the artist’s quest for meaning and survival. These elements altogether represent the artist’s resilience and determination to overcome life’s challenges, from surviving cancer to dedicating herself full-time to creation and storytelling. Through the fine detail she puts into each canvas, the selection of rich colors she pairs with, and the animals that she chooses to help represent a unique chapter in Mona’s journey, TOSCANE's work is a cross-continental adventure in exploring life’s beauty, vulnerability, and mystery, as she continues pursuing her practice as a painter between France, her home country, and Japan, the place that shaped her career.

This is the first of two solo exhibitions at Birdo Space that will introduce selected works she has made until now, in which one of them includes a piece made together with Shiogama painter TSURIFUNE Fukiko.

TOSCANE / トスカーヌ

1999年パリ生まれ。ビジュアルアーティスト。モロッコ、オランダ、スリナム、日本といった国々での国際的な経験を経て、現在は仙台を拠点に活動しながら、パリにもアトリエを構えています。フランスおよび日本で美術教育を受け、ニコラ・ド・スタール、ルネ・グリュオ、歌川広重、葛飾北斎から影響を受けた表現を展開しています。

TOSCANE is a French visual artist born in Paris in 1999. After an international trajectory spanning Morocco, the Netherlands, Suriname, and Japan, she is currently based in Sendai while maintaining a studio in Paris. Trained in both France and Japan, her practice is influenced by Nicolas de Staël, René Gruau, Hiroshige, and Hokusai. Her work is represented by two galleries in France and one gallery in Canada.
