「私たちは他人だった。ある時点では、私たちは見知らぬ者同士だったし、今でもそうかもしれない。私のことを知っているなら、いつからそうなったのだろうか?初めて会う者、または私を知っているだけの者にとって、私たちの関係を他人以上のものに発展させるには、何が必要になるだろうか。

見知らぬ者を写真に撮ることには本質的な魅力がある。写真は、瞬く間に一生残る瞬間をとらえる。彼らの人生について無知であるにもかかわらず、私は写真を通して見知らぬ彼らの変わらぬ記憶を所有することになる。それは深い親密さと非人間性の融合と言える。

この写真展に登場する人々は、私にとって赤の他人だ。私は彼らを全く知らない。彼らについて何も知らないが、知ることはできたかもしれない。近づき「お名前は?」「調子はどうですか?」と尋ねることもできたはずだ。そこから会話は、仕事、趣味、寒い日のお気に入りの食べ物、地元のお薦めカフェなど様々な話題に発展できたかもしれない。無論、挨拶だけで終わっていたかもしれないが。

人はいつ他人でなくなるのだろうか。これまでの人間関係を振り返ってみて、見知らぬ者からそれ以上の関係に変わった正確な瞬間を、わたしたちは特定できるのだろうか? 友達、同僚、恋人・・・。関係性は徐々に変化していったのか、それとも瞬時だったのか。同様に、毎日話したり、笑い合ったりと一緒に過ごす者たちも、いとも簡単に他人になってしまうことがある。

本展の写真に写っているのはどんな人物だろうか。 人生の最愛の人、無限の可能性を秘めた世界変革者・・・彼らは物語の主人公なのだ。彼らの立場に立ち、彼らになりきり、ぜひ繰り返し想像してみてほしい。」(Nathan Clemente)

We were strangers. At one point, we were strangers to each other, and maybe we still are. If you know me, when did this change? For those of you who don't know me, or are just familiar with me, what will it take to develop our relationship to something more than just a stranger, if it ever even does.

Photographing strangers holds an inherent fascination for me. In the blink of an eye, an image captures a moment destined to last a lifetime. Despite being oblivious to their life, struggles, or narrative, I possess this enduring memory of them. It's a blend of profound intimacy and impersonality.

The people in this photo exhibit are strangers to me. I don’t know them, not really. I did not know anything about them, yet, I could have. I could have decided to walk up to any one of them and ask “What’s your name?” or “How are you doing today?”. From there, the conversation could drift to any number of topics; our job, our hobbies, favourite food to eat on a cold day, or recommendations on what local cafe to go to. The conversation could also just end at a hello.

When does a person cease being a stranger? Reflecting on existing relationships, can you pinpoint the exact moment when someone transformed from a stranger into something more? A friend. A colleague. A lover. Did it happen gradually, or was the connection instant? At the same time, just as quickly, people who you would talk to everyday, share laughs with, a home with, can just as easily become a stranger.

In my exhibit, who are these individuals captured in these images? They are the protagonists of their own narrative. The love of someone’s life. Potentially world-changers with limitless possibilities. I encourage you to momentarily step into their shoes, to envision being them, and then continue along.

Nathan Clemente ネイサン・クレメンテ
カナダ・トロント出身。オンタリオ州キングストンクイーンズ大学卒。
学生時代に写真分野に関心を持ち、メディア企業StudioQやDDQIC、キャンパスラジオCFRC Radioに関わりながら、写真家やソーシャル メディア コーディネーターとして活動する。現在は主にアナログ写真で表現するが、あらゆるカメラで瞬間を捉えながら新たな視点を探究するとともに、その視点を世界と共有することに熱意を注いでいる。

Nathan Clemente, a Toronto native and alumnus of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, discovered his affinity for photography during his academic years. Engaging fervently in on-campus studios such as StudioQ, DDQIC, and CFRC Radio, he assumed roles as a photographer and social media coordinator. Amidst his exploration of the realms of photography and media, personal circumstances unfortunately led him to temporarily abandon this artistic pursuit.

Recently, following his relocation to Japan to work as an ALT, Nathan felt a yearning for a creative outlet, a void that persisted for years. In response, he embraced a resurgence of his photographic passion, opting for a new artistic medium: analog photography. While predominantly immersed in analog photography, Nathan employs any available camera to eloquently convey his fervor for capturing moments, thereby imbuing his perspective with a renewed purpose, ready to be shared with the world.
