マオリの背景を持つアーティスト兼Shared Linesプロジェクトメンバー、リンダ・リーは、自身のマオリ混血のルーツや先住民族マオリ文化の知識と表現を軸に、先住民文化の視点を作品やプロジェクト運営に強く取り入れ、文化的アイデンティティや歴史を非言語的な表現を通じて再構築し共有することに取り組んでいます。
リーは、ハラケケ（ニュージーランド・フラックス）の葉を使ったマオリ伝統的編み・織り技法で用いる織物工芸ラランガを通して、部族そして個人の物語を語り継いでいます。
本展では、本多工房滞在中に制作した新作を含む、部族のアイデンティティや先人からの教えを形にした織物作品の展示を行います。なお、会場内では2024年のリサーチ滞在をもとに画家・浅野友理子さんが制作したアオテアロア/ニュージーランドの植物を題材にした作品の一部を展示します。

Linda LEE (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Huia, Ngāti Kuri, Te Aupōuri, Te Rarawa), a mixed-race artist of Māori heritage and a member of the Shared Lines Project, draws on her indigenous roots, knowledge, and self-expression of Māori culture to bring forward a fresh cultural perspective into both project management and artwork. By means of non-verbal expression, she aims to reconstruct and discuss elements of shared indigenous narratives, cultural identity and history.

Additionally, Linda discovered she was whāngai (adopted) at age 19, which led her to explore identity, whakapapa through exhibition, installation, photography, performance, and bookform. She runs Ōtari Raranga - Māori Weaving, co-runs Urban Dream Brokerage, and has recently begun her studies in whakairo - Māori Woodcarving.

During her stay in Japan, LEE will undertake two projects:

1 - As a researcher, she focuses on taniwha as a starting point for this work. Taniwha, known as supernatural Māori mythical water creatures - kaitiaki, that can either protect, or destroy tangata, whānau, hapū and iwi - communities. She plans to do field work in understanding various aspects of Japanese earthquake mythology, such as the Namazu catfish and the beliefs related to the Kaname-Ishi or sacred stone. Together with ISHIKURA Toshiaki from the Akita University of Art, there is a planned talk to introduce and discuss both Māori and Japanese cultural perspectives regarding "earthquakes, tsunami" as well as "elemental gods and local community beliefs." These activities serve as a goal of sparking curiosity and interest, as well open up dialogue between both Maori and Miyagi’s cultures, questioning indigenous and contemporary methods of resource and disaster management with the general public.

2 - As an artist, she will showcase installations from her research alongside raranga, whakairo, traditional arts of Māori weaving and carving, to pass down personal stories, tribal narratives, and ancestral teachings that are connected to her heritage and address indigenous approaches to climate change. She will exhibit raranga works that demonstrate these aspects and show how this kind of self-expression can be used as a method of passing on traditions and Pūrākau important lessons for future generations. In addition to exhibiting, she will also do various scheduled and drop-in workshops both in relation to introducing and fostering understanding of Māori culture to the Miyagi and greater Tohoku regional community, as well as to reaffirm the connection between local people and the land. There will also be networking opportunities at these venues for future Shared Lines Project endeavors.

本展では、リサーチ成果を基にしたインスタレーション作品と、部族や個人の物語、そして先祖の教えを伝承するマオリ織物工芸ラランガを展示します。
なお、同会場にて、2024年のアオテアロアリサーチ滞在をもとに画家・浅野友理子さんが制作したアオテアロア/ニュージーランドの植物を題材にした作品の一部を展示しています。

LEE will be showcasing installations from her research. In addition, she will showcase - raranga - the traditional craft of Māori weaving and carving, as a means of passing down personal stories, tribal narratives, and ancestral teachings.During the exhibition, LEE will also be doing knitmaking and weaving work on site. Visitors are invited to meet and chat with the artist.

Additionally, the venue will also be exhibiting some of the artworks by artist Yuriko Asano, which are based on Aotearoa/New Zealand plants and were created based on her 2024 Aotearoa Research Stay.

マオリシンボルをフロッタージュ（擦り出し）しよう　Frottage Maori symbols

マオリ族の模様は、個人の歴史、祖先、社会的地位、そして人生の出来事を表す「魂の履歴書」とも言えるシンボルと言われています。渦巻き状の「コル」はシダの新芽を表し、新しい始まり、成長、そして平和を象徴する普遍的なシンボルとなっています。今回は、リンダ・リーが制作した魚の鱗、シダなどの模様をつかってフロッタージュをします。

Maori patterns are said to be symbols that can be considered "soul resumes," representing an individual's history, ancestry, social status, and life events. The spiral "koru" represents a new fern sprout and is a universal symbol of new beginnings, growth, and peace. This time, we will be creating frottage using the woodbrocks of fish scale, fern, and other patterns created by Linda Lee.

ラランガワークショップ　Raranga workshop

ラランガは、ニュージーランドのマオリ文化における伝統的な 編み・織りの技法 の総称で、特に ハラケケ（ニュージーランド・フラックス：Phormium tenax） の葉を使った工芸です。主に、主にハラケケの葉を収穫し、煮たり、乾かしたり、叩いたりして柔らかく加工して使用します。ラランガの文様は、部族のアイデンティティや物語を表現し、文化・精神性を伝える象徴的な工芸と言えます。
今回のワークショップでは、主に平織技法を用いて、小物ケースをつくります。

アーティストプロフィール

リンダ・リー
Shared Lines Collaborativeのクリエイティブディレクター、Ōtari Raranga Weaversのプロデューサー、Urban Dream Brokerageの共同プロデューサー。ニュージーランド、アオテアロア州テ・ワンガヌイ・ア・タラを拠点とするアーティスト、カイラランガ、アートプロデューサー、そして教育者。カンタベリー大学で写真の修士号、イベントマネジメントと教育のグラデュエイト・ディプロマを取得。ニュージーランド国内外で高等教育および中等教育の教鞭を執った経験を持つ。
リンダは 19 歳で自分がファンガイ※であることに気づき、マオリ人、中国人、パケハ人、ダルメシアン/クロアチア人の混血アーティストとして、アイデンティティを探求し、家族、ファカパパ、さらには先住民族の歴史を、写真やテキスト、インスタレーションなどの展示形式を通じて研究し、再解釈するようになる。マオリ語のマタウランガ、ラランガ、ロンゴア、テ・レオに関する継続的な研究と、災害管理が彼女の長年の実践に織り込まれている。先住民族の芸術形式に対する興味が深まるにつれ、彼女は自身の伝統と再びつながり、言語の壁がある空間で作業する際に非言語コミュニケーションの手段を発達させている。

※ファンガイとは、養子制度や養子縁組を指す言葉で、コミュニティや拡大家族である「ファナウ（whānau）」が子供を迎え入れ、その子供を家族の一員として育てる習慣を意味する。ファンガイは、単なる養子縁組を超えて、血縁関係のない子供を特定の家族やコミュニティが受け入れ、育てるという、血縁と社会的なつながりを結びつける重要な概念と言える。

Linda LEE
Producer of the international arts collective, Shared Lines Collaborative, Wellington’s Ōtari Raranga Weavers and, co-producer of the Urban Dream Brokerage, and artist, Linda LEE (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Huia, Ngāti Kuri,Te Aupōuri, Te Rarawa). Linda discovered she was whāngai at age 19 and as a mixed-race artist - Māori, Chinese, Pākehā, Dalmatian/Croatian, this has led her to explore identity, researching and reinterpreting family, whakapapa, and further indigenous histories through exhibition, installation, photography, and book form. Continued study around mātauranga Māori, raranga, rongoā, and te reo Māori, as well as disaster management, are woven into her years of practice. Her developing interest in indigenous art forms reconnects to her heritage and develops a means of non-verbal communication when working in spaces with language barriers.
