櫻井園子の創作は、「私」という固有の存在が枠にはめられ、消費されてしまうことへの強い違和感から始まりました。彼女は、そうした規定の言葉に抗い、「消費されない個」であり続けるために制作を続けています。絵画、パフォーマンス、写真、そして現在の立体作品へと媒体を変えながらも、その根底には「自己を見失わずに生きる」という普遍的な問いが流れていると言えます。また制作とは、自己との継続的な対話であり、更新の行為でもあります。問うこと、考えること、手を動かすこと――それらを反復することで、彼女の内側にある「純度の高い自分」が少しずつ増殖していく感覚があると言います。作品とは、そのプロセスの結晶であり、思考の痕跡でもあるのです。
近年の制作テーマである「情緒採集」では、櫻井は心が揺れた瞬間や、無意識に掴み取った感覚を素材として集め、それを見返し、なぜ心が動いたのかを思考する時間を大切にしています。旅先など、日常から離れた環境で感じ取った情緒や記憶は、年月を経て新たな気配を纏い、小さな景色――小景として立ち現れます。それらを石粉粘土や段ボールで立体的に組み上げる行為は、流動する彼女自身の内面を可視化する試みでもあります。作品を配置するという行為もまた、彼女の思考の延長線上にあります。直感的に置き、いつでも動かせる状態にしておくことで、答えを固定せず、変化し続ける自己のあり方を保つことができます。彼女はその自由さの中で、自分という存在の形を繰り返し見つめ直していると言えます。石粉粘土や段ボールは、水に還すことで再び形を変えられる素材です。その可逆性は、常に「やり直せる」「更新できる」櫻井の思考の象徴と言えます。幼少期にダンゴムシの家を作ったときの記憶や手の感触を思い出しながら、分解と再生の循環の中に、彼女は自己の本質を見出しているのです。櫻井にとって表現活動とは、変化し続ける自分の巣を掘り進める行為であり、その奥底に確かに息づく「消費されない個」を探し続ける営みなのです。
本展では、立ち現れた気配と小景の様子を粘土や書き割りの作品として具現化し展示します。
--- SAKURAI Sonoko's creative work began with a strong sense of discomfort at the way the word and concept of "woman" confines and consumes her unique existence. She resists such restrictive language and continues to create in order to remain an "individual that cannot be consumed." While her medium has shifted to painting, performance, photography, and now her three-dimensional works, the universal question of "living without losing sight of oneself" runs through her practice.
The act of creating works are both a continuous dialogue with herself and an act of renewal. By repeatedly asking questions, thinking, and using her hands, she feels as is her "pure and authentic form of self" within her gradually comes to shape. Sonoko’s works are the crystallization this process, leaving traces of her thoughts and ideas on them.
In her recent creative theme of “Jōcho saishū,”or “Sentimental Gathering," She collects emotional moments and unconsciously captured sensations as her material, cherishing the time she spends on them and reflecting on why they those feelings arose and moved her. The emotions and memories she senses in her travel journeys and other environments far removed from her everyday life take on both new form and aura over the years, emerging as small scenes. The act of assembling these materials in three-dimensional form using clay and cardboard is also an attempt to visualize her own fluid inner self.

「日差しの強い日には、私の頭の片隅で数年前に行ったロータリーのある高台の場所が思い出される。

秋は近いのに残暑が厳しかったその日、私は高台までの大体の道のりを 把握後、地図を見ずに歩き進んだ。平坦な道が少しずつ角度を帯び始め、私を囲む周りの景色は街から木々へと変わっていき、カーブの強い坂、 細く短い道、急な階段などを通り過ぎていくとそれらの緩急は私に複雑な体感を与えるのだった。

目的のロータリーに到着後、あたりをぐるりと回っていると蔦の絡まる 住宅の壁面に目を奪われ、心が引っ張られるような感覚を受けた。おそらくそれは私がここまで歩いてきた道のりと体感が、その蔦の茎や葉の複雑な形状に投影され、強い印象を残したからなのだと思う。

見知らぬ場所を約 2 時間ほど歩き、新鮮な刺激を沢山受けた私は徐々に感受性が強くなり始めていることを実感した。閑静な住宅街と木々から 生まれる日向と日影の強いコントラストが「地上と地中」や「洞窟」の イメージを抱かせ、私が土の中や蟻の巣を歩いているかのような想像が かすかに広がって行った。

こうして記憶の中で移動経路を再訪することはとても面白い。自分の心が揺れたものや行った場所、そしてそこを歩いている自分の姿をまるで鳥のように真上から目で追っている。

辿り終えるとその記憶が情緒を纏いながら、半立体の地図のような姿で浮かび上がってくる。私はそれを形作り、並べ、再び観察したい。」

"There is a place that comes to my mind whenever it was a sunny day. It was a hilltop with a roundabout, a place I visited some few years ago.

On that day, the lingering summer heat was intense despite the fact it was autumn. Once I figured out the route, I briskly walked straight to the hilltop without looking at my map. Then I soon began to experience gradual a change in my surroundings - the flat road my feet were on began to incline upward. The scenery changed from city to trees. Passing through sharp curves, narrow and short paths, and steep stairs, the varying inclines and declines left my body feeling exhilarated.

Upon arriving at my destination, I circled round and round the roundabout until my eyes were drawn to the wall of a house entwined with vines, feeling a sense of being pulled in. I thought it was probably because the path I had walked and the sensations I had experienced getting up there were projected onto these complex shapes of the vine's stems and leaves. All of these left a strong impression on me.

For me, the chance to freely walk for about two hours like this in an unfamiliar place was so invigorating and thrilling to my senses. The strong contrast between the sunlight and shadows created by both the quiet residential area and the trees evoked sceneries of exploring both above and below the ground, and among caves. These scenes gave me a faint imagination of myself as if I were walking through the soil or an ant's nest.

Revisiting paths like these in my memory is very riveting for me. My heart quivers, thinking at the memories of places I've visited, looking back at the things I see, and the sight of myself walking there—as if I were watching myself glaring from the sky up above, like a bird. When I finish tracing it, that precious memory emerges like a semi-three-dimensional map, imbued with such deep emotion. And when everything is over, I want to shape, arrange, and observe this journey all over again."

宮城県仙台市生まれ。近年の主な展覧会に「R I C E Aotearoa」(2025/ Ūkaipo, Aotearoa New Zealand)、「R I C E Project」(2024/birdo space) 個展「群小景」(2022/birdo space)、個展「影小景」(2021/birdo space)、「写真 新世紀 東京展」(2016/ 東京都写真美術館 )。第 39 回写真新世紀優秀賞(アンナ・ ダネマン氏選)、第 23 回グラフィック「1_WALL」審査員奨励賞(長崎訓子氏選)。
2020 年より作品から派生した小作品や、アートブックなどを制作 / 販売する活動 「思考島物産」を始める。2023 年より塩竈市のアーティストスタジオ「本多工房」 を利用中。

Born in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, JAPAN in 1993. Specializes in a variety of creative work such as paintings, photographs, illustrations, clay art, performance art, and creating handmade zines.

Recent exhibitions include her participation in the Japan - Aotearoa New Zealand group exhibition series “R I C E" (Aotearoa: 2025, Japan: 2024), “Gunshohkei (Miniature Landscapes)「群小景」” in 2022, and “Kage Shokei 「影小景」” in 2021, all held at birdo space. She also has been a recipient of awards such as the Nagasaki Noriko Selection for the 23rd Graphic「1_WALL」Jury Encouragement Award, and the Anna Danemann Selection for the 36th New Cosmos of Photography Excellence Award.

Recent activities include "Shikojimabussan" a project she launched in 2020 where she produces small pieces and hand-made art books, originating from both her diverse array of creative activities and local artist collective collaborations. Since 2023, SAKURAI has been creating works at her atelier at Honda Kobo (Honda Artist Studio) in Shiogama City, Miyagi, JAPAN.
