The Journey of Cascading Seeds: A Solo Exhibition by ASANO Yuriko @ birdo space
Exhibition Introduction

ASANO Yuriko travels to various regions where she learns about the respective plant uses, food culture, and women's handicrafts that are practiced and passed down over generations by the people of that place. From her journeys, she creates artworks that document these experiences.
She has recently visited Wellington in Aotearoa New Zealand, and had the opportunity to have dialogues and conversations about the history, culture, and traditional household practices done from both indigenous folk and immigrants. She even learned about traditional plant techniques and herbal medicine culture from her indigenous Maori friends she made there. In addition, the artist also travels to various places in East Asia which share the same latitude as the mountainous Tohoku region in Japan, researching on the region’s wild edible plants and indigenous species. She regularly visits the South Korean province of Gangwon, and studies about the wide variety of crops which are native to the area, as well as both learn and understand the personal memories and anecdotes by the families and people who share the same connection to these harvests.
In her works, ASANO portrays these unique plants which all share the wisdom and usefulness for survival in daily life. Her pieces reflect how plant uses, food culture, and handicrafts all encapsulate how each community has built a personal relationship with the land they live in, and how it allows her to think about the bond between nature and people alongside the coexistence of diverse cultures.
This exhibition will feature paintings and prints depicting the plants she encountered in her fieldwork. Through her artworks, ASANO continues to diligently record and share the forgotten skills, knowledge, and wisdom of the people from generations past. It is her hope that this exhibition will serve as a catalyst for helping connect local wisdom together with the future.
