2008年にスタートして以来、 高い評価を得てきた東北最大の写真の祭典・塩竈フォトフェスティバル。宮城県塩竈市の写真館に生まれ育った写真家・平間至が実行委員長を、国内外で活動するインディペンデント・キュレーター菊田樹子がアーティスティック・ディレクターを務め、第一線で活躍する写真家や写真関係者を招き、2008年当時はまだ普及していなかったポートフォリオレヴューの実施、歴史的建造物をはじめ市内各所で、多様かつ質の高い写真の展示を行ってきました。第9回目となる「塩竈フォトフェスティバル2026」の一環としてビルドスペースでは、塩竈フォトフェスティバル2024大賞受賞者・髙橋実希による写真展「あの庭の花／Specimens」を開催します。

　髙橋は、自身の生家の庭と、そこに深く関わってきた祖父の存在を起点に、風景に染み込んだ人の営みや感情の痕跡を見つめてきました。祖父が手を入れ続けた庭のかたちや、家の木目に残る手の記憶は、時間とともに変化しながら、いま目の前の風景の中へと姿を変えていきます。庭の草木や家の木材の質感、そこに射し込む光の陰影といった日常の断片を採集し、印画紙の上で重ね合わせるようにして、髙橋は過去と現在、記憶と風景を結び直すように写真を構築します。 　そこに写る像は、出来事を記録するものではなく、過ぎ去った時間の層を不確かな姿で留めた痕跡のようでもあります。曖昧な像の揺らぎのなかに、家という空間に刻まれた感情の残響や、失われたものの気配が微かに立ち上がる。その揺らぎを通して、写真が“見る”という行為を越え、心や身体の奥に沈む記憶へと触れるための方法であり得ることが示されています。

生まれ育った家には、大きな庭がある。 その庭を探検することが好きだった。 けれど、そこにはいつも、近づきがたい祖父がいた。 大きな脚立を使って松の枝をいじっていたり、 地面にしゃがみ込んでなにかをしていた。 幼い私は、見つからないように、 目を合わせないように、そっと庭を歩く。 季節ごとに花が咲き、枝が伸び、葉が落ちる。 当時はそれをただ季節の移ろいとして眺めていた。 けれど、庭の変化は決して自然だけのものではなかった。 日々の草取りや枝の剪定、石や植物の配置。 庭をかたちづくっていたのは、祖父の意思と手だった。 家の建て替えが決まったとき、祖父は庭の松を切った。 立派で、 祖父がとりわけ大切にしていたと思っていた 松だったが、気づいたときにはすでに切り終えようと しているところだった。 思えば、 祖父は家そのもののような人だった。 庭の草花や廊下の木目にも、気配が微かに滲んでいる。 記憶が少しずつ書き換えられていくように、 庭も家も静かに姿を変える。 家族の生活が積み重なり、庭の様相は更新され、 廊下の木目は濃くなっていく。 変化は目に見えない蓄積となって刻まれていく。 その輪郭をそっとなぞるように、 私はいまもあの庭を見つめている。(髙橋実希)

As part of the ninth edition of the biannual SGMA: Shiogama Photo Festival 2026, birdo space will be holding "The Flowers of that Garden (Ano niwa no hana) / Specimens, " a photo exhibition by Miki TAKAHASHI, grand prix recipient of the 2024 edition of the Shiogama Photo Festival.
The theme focuses on exploring what she has seen and felt growing up in her grandfather’s garden. By meticulously layering her photographs she has taken over time and taking them over again at the same spot, cutting out, constructing, and piecing them altogether, she creates composite images that connect past and present, moments and landscapes - which all bring back to the garden and her surroundings - to which she considers an important part of her upbringing.
By visually collecting fragments of everyday life that she sees, such as the plants, the wood textures, and the shadows of light shining through, the images captured do not record the events that happened that she’s witnessed, but rather resemble traces of memories preserved but forgotten as time moves on.
Beyond what can be seen through these images is what memories - while not definite - that can be ambiguous and fleeting, and can invite onlookers to look within themselves and reflect beyond what they can see on the surface, but instead explore the silent yet raw feelings that emerge upon seeing them.
Through exploring this Garden, TAKAHASHI demonstrates how the act of "seeing" the visual can transcend what we see and invite us to explore the echoes of diverse emotions that permeate the space we both occupy and share.

髙橋 実希 / Miki TAKAHASHI
1996年静岡県生まれ。2019年に東京工芸大学芸術学部写真学科を卒業し、現在は東京を拠点に活動している。人の無意識や記憶を主題に、写真やコラージュによる作品を制作。2024年、塩竈フォトフェスティバル・ポートフォリオレビュー写真賞にて大賞を受賞。

Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1996.
Graduated in 2019 from the Tokyo Polytechnic University’s Department of Photography in the Faculty of Art. Currently lives and works in Tokyo. Her works explore the depths of human unconsciousness and memories through the means of photography and collage.

About the SGMA: Shiogama Photo Festival (For International visitors and residents)

Since 2008 and held biennially since, the SGMA: Shiogama Photo Festival has earned critical acclaim and is widely respected as the Tohoku region’s largest and most prestigious photography festival. It has brought together both some of the field's premiere photographers as well as leading industry insiders to Shiogama to participate in activities that showcase the art of photography to the public and the community.

It introduced a photographers portfolio review—a format uncommon in 2008—and has also exhibited diverse, high-quality photographs in historic buildings, public venues, and other locations around the city - including birdo space.

The Executive Committee overseeing the festival is run by Itaru HIRAMA, a photographer born and raised in a photo studio in Shiogama City, Miyagi. He also serves as the committee’s top chairperson. Joining him is Itsuki KIKUTA, an independent curator active in both Japan and overseas, who also serves as the festival’s artistic director.
