櫻井園子は、ここ数年、粘土細工やダンボール画の手法を用いて、記憶の断片から新たな光景を浮かび上がらせる「小景」を形づくっています。本展では、彼女の記憶の中で群生し続ける睡蓮を中心に、記憶から連想する新たな光景への構築を試みています。 「少し前、旅行先で庭園を巡った時の記憶を思い返していました。もう少しで秋が訪れそうな時期でしたが、まだ借景となっている山や庭園に育つ植物たちの緑はハリのある深い鮮やかさと、青々しい匂いを残していました。 　園内には大きな池があり、睡蓮が少しの隙間を保ちながら池全体を覆って群生していて、一つ一つの葉が水面を左右に、そして静かに浮かびながら揺れ動いていました。 　その様子を記憶の中で見つけた瞬間、私の心も強く揺れ動いたのと同時に自分の中に沈んでいたいくつかの記憶や思い出の断片が浮かび上がり、連想され始めました。その中で特に強い印象を残したのは、朝焼けによって赤く染まった艶のある質感を持ったマグカップです。それには赤色の薄い花紙を何層か重ねたような影も出来ているような光景でした。そこから立つ湯気も同様に赤く揺らぎ、マグカップは記憶の中でぼやけた輪郭のまま、庭園の記憶の中にある群生した睡蓮の葉一つ一つに重なりながら投影されて広がって行きました。その時、不思議な開放感に包まれたのを覚えています。」-櫻井園子 Through her techniques of using clay work and cardboard paintings to compose sceneries and landscapes, SONOKO Sakurai’s recent works focuses on reconstructing memorable moments out of fragments of her memories. For this exhibition, she focuses on the memory of swaying water lilies she encountered which left an impression on her trip, the deep emotion she felt while she saw them, and among the clusters of lily leaves, the mystery of a steaming deep velvet red mug that moved her. These memories form a story a fascinating adventure, and visitors are invited to experience the shared euphoria and emotions expressed by SAKURAI as expressed in her exhibit called “Miniature Landscapes「群小景」 Gunshohkei”

櫻井園子 / SAKURAI Sonoko
1993年宮城県仙台市生まれ。近年の主な展覧会に「影小景」(2021/ビルドスペース)、「こころの採集」(2019/ビルドスペース)、「本を、つくってみた-アーティストブックの制作と展示-」(2017-2018/NADiff a/p/a/r/t他）、「写真新世紀 東京展」(2016/東京都写真美術館)。第36回写真新世紀優秀賞（アンナ・ダネマン氏選）、 第23回グラフィック「1_WALL」 審査員奨励賞（長崎訓子氏選）。 2020年より作品から派生した小作品や、アートブックなどを制作/販売している「思考島物産」を始める。

Born in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, JAPAN in 1993. Specializes in a variety of creative work such as paintings, photographs, illustrations, clay art, performance art, and creating handmade zines. Recent exhibitions include “Shadow Scene, 「影小景」Kage Shuokei ” in 2021 and “A Collection of hearts,「こころの採集」Kokoro to Saishu” in 2019, both exhibited at Birdo Space. She also has been a recipient of awards such as the Nagasaki Noriko Selection for the 23rd Graphic「1_WALL」Jury Encouragement Award, and the Anna Danemann Selection for the 36th New Cosmos of Photography Excellence Award.
