Honda Kobo (本多工房) is a shared creative community space located in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, JAPAN.

Opened in 2023, the space operates inside a four-storey tall building where a family-run Japanese Kimono shop once operated within the city’s Kitahama neighborhood during the Showa and Heisei eras.

A five minute walk from JR East Senseki Line’s Hon-Shiogama railway station, the Kobo is composed of four artist studios, a guest room, a shared lounge, kitchen, and a balcony overlooking the Shiogama skyline. 

Through this space, Honda Kobo specializes in fostering emerging local creative talent while revitalizing a historical neighborhood at the same time.

本多工房は、宮城県塩竈市にあるクリエイティブ・コミュニティ・スペースです。

2023年にオープンしたこの4階建の建物は、かつて昭和〜平成期に北浜で家族経営の呉服店が営われていました。

JR東日本の仙石線本塩釜駅から徒歩5分の「工房」は、4つのアトリエ、ゲストルーム、共有ラウンジ、キッチン、そして塩釜の街並みを見下ろすバルコニーで構成されています。

このスペースを通して、本多工房は、地元の新しいクリエイティブな才能を育成すると同時に、歴史的な地域を活性化させることを目指しています。

Backstory: how was Honda Kobo born?

The idea was created out of a shared common initiative to bring new life to a neighborhood known for its deep roots in the local community, especially after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. 

At the start of the Reiwa era in the early 2020s, various members of the community – including residents of Shiogama, students of the Tohoku Institute of Technology, and Birdo Flugas – all contributed in refurbishing and retrofitting the building for art and cultural use, giving it a new raison d’etre for a new generation of occupants. 

Rebirth: What’s the Kobo now?

After years of renovation, the building was reopened to the public in 2023 and was renamed the Honda Artist Studio or more known as Honda Kobo. A number of diverse activities have since taken place soon after its opening, such as casual meet-ups with other fellow artists, creative workshops, as well as talk events, and language learning sessions. 

Most notably, its artist studios – both in individual rooms and in shared lounge spaces – are the core flagship elements of the Kobo. Our artist studios provide a proper space for artists to create their own unique artwork in their own comfort and pace, but most especially, a chance for members to grow in their respective creative discipline. 

Honda Kobo occasionally runs Open Studio visits to the public and by scheduled appointment. Visitors are welcome to visit each artists’ creative working space and interact with them about art and their creative process. 

Honda Kobo is humbled and proud of its artists creating art in this revitalized space in Shiogama’s Kitahama neighborhood, while continuing to reach out to the community to collaborate on events and shared lounge artist membership residencies.

It’s all for the love of art and to foster emerging artistic talent that represents the best of what Japan’s Tohoku region can offer.

バックストーリー：本多工房はどのようにして生まれたのか？

2011年の東日本大震災後、地域社会に新しい息吹をもたらそうという共通のイニシアチブから生まれました。

2021年には、アーティスト、東北工業大学新井研究室の学生、ビルド・フルーガスなど、地域のさまざまな人々がこの建物を文化芸術のスペースとして活用しようと、セルフリノベーションで改修・改装し、新しい意義を生み出そうとしています。

再生： 今、Koboは？

数年にわたる改修工事を経て、2023年に「HONDA STUDIO」、通称「本多工房」としてオープンしました。オープン直後から、アーティスト仲間との気軽なミートアップやクリエイティブなワークショップ、トークイベントや語学学習会など、さまざまな活動が行われています。

中でも、個室と共有ラウンジを備えたアーティスト・スタジオは、工房の中核をなす重要な要素と言えます。アーティスト・スタジオは、アーティストが自分のペースで快適に独自の作品を制作するための適切なスペースを提供するだけでなく、特に会員がそれぞれの創作分野で成長する機会を提供しています。

本多工房では、時折オープンスタジオを開催しています。各アーティストの創作スペースを訪問し、アートや創作プロセスについて交流することができます。

本多工房は、塩竈市北浜地区のこの活性化されたスペースでアートを創作するアーティストたちの表現活動や制作環境をサポートするとともに、イベントや共有ラウンジ・アーティスト会員制レジデンスなどの共同作業を行うために、地域社会との交流を続けています。

すべては芸術を愛し、東北で最高のものを象徴する、新たな芸術的才能を育成するためとも言えるでしょう。

Our Kobo Members: Local and diverse creative talent

The Studio Members at Honda Kobo are young, diverse, dynamic, international, and interdisciplinary. Our roster of creative talent are all based in Miyagi, and have deep connections to Shiogama, its surrounding areas in the Matsushima Bay Area (Tagajo, Rifu, Shichigahama, and Matsushima), as well as Sendai city. 

Coming from various backgrounds and lived experiences, our Studio Members together build a vibrant and lively shared creative space that fosters support and empowerment for one another, as fellow creative professionals.
